MP byelection on Nov 9, to coincide with Himachal polls

New Delhi : The Election Commission on Friday fixed polling for the Chitrakoot Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh on November 9 to coincide with the Himachal Pradesh elections.

The counting of votes, however, will not be on December 18 as in Himachal Pradesh. The by-election votes will be counted on November 12.

Alike Himachal Pradesh, the nominations start on Monday with the gazette notification while last date for nominations is October 23, scrutiny the next day and last date for withdrawal of candidates is October 26.


The Chitrakoot seat in Satna district is lying vacant since May 29 after the death of Congress MLA Prem Singh after prolonged illness.

The Election Commission, however, did not announce other by-elections to fill up four vacant seats in the Lok Sabha and the vacancies in other Assemblies, including one in Madhya Pradesh itself for the Mungawali seat which was lying vacant after the death of Congress MLA Mahendra Singh Kalukhera on September 11.

The Lok Sabha seats of Gorakhpur and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh fell vacant from resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya respectively while Uluberia Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal fell vacant after the death of Trinamul Congress leader Sultan Ahmed. Araria seat in Bihar from the death of former union Minister Mohd Taslimuddin of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
