Police said the head-on collision took place due to reckless and rash driving by the lorry driver. Gowda tried to manoeuvre a hump near the hospital and was not wearing a helmet when the accident occured. He was on his way to Kengeri while the lorry was heading towards Uttarahalli from Mysuru Road. He sustained grievous injuries to his chest and limbs. Passersby rushed him to BGS Global Hospital where he was declared brought dead. His body was then shifted to Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysuru Road for post mortem.
Kengeri police arrested lorry driver Sudhakar and registered a case under Sections 279 and 304 (a) of the IPC. While a section of the electronic media reported that the accident was due to a pothole, senior police officials who visited the spot confirmed that it was due to rash driving. ACP Traffic (West) Shivashankar said, “I inspected the spot. The accident was due to reckless driving. We have arrested the driver and seized the lorry. It was not due to a pothole or the hump.”
Another senior police officer said, “The two-way Uttarahalli Main Road is closed for heavy vehicles during the peak hours - from 7am to 11am. The lorry headed from Mysuru Road just before Kengeri traffic police closed the road for heavy vehicles. The lorry was overspeeding when the accident happened.”
