Around half -a -dozen armed criminals on Thursday looted more than Rs 22 lakh from a nationalised bank located in the heart of Sheikhpura town, 124 km southeast of Patna, police said.

As the branch of the Indian Bank ,located at Katra Chowk, opened in the morning, the criminals barged into the premises and held manager Pankaj Kumar and other staff captive before decamping with Rs 22.67 lakh from cash counter, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Amit Sharan said.

The criminals also thrashed the branch manager and a customer, the SDPO said, adding that they also locked the main gate of the bank branch from outside before decamping with the looted money.

The borders of the district had been sealed and police teams were conducting raids to nab the criminals, he added.
