BENGALURU: The High Court on Wednesday directed Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to submit a status report with regard to the bio-mining activities taken up to clear the waste accumulated at the landfill site in Mavallipura. A division bench of Justice B S Patil and Justice B V Nagarathna asked the BBMP to submit the report by November 10.
As per the division bench’s order on September 4, 2017, the BBMP had to submit the report on Wednesday but that was not done. In October 2014, the BBMP had informed the court that they would undertake bio-mining activities in Mavallipura to clear the accumulated garbage. The bench was hearing PIL filed by NGOs in 2012-13 seeking directions to solve the garbage issue in Bengaluru city.
The court also directed the BBMP to provide a final list of ward committee members appointed to monitor the civic issues in each ward. The BBMP had not finalised the list of the ward committee members due to the recently held mayoral elections.
What is bio mining?
Bio mining is an environment friendly technique where bio-cultures are sprayed on loose layers of waste at landfills. The treated waste is then sterilised and can be separated as organic and non-organic or biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste before recycling.
