Nanded Municipal Corporation Election Results 2017: Counting of votes underway

Polling for the Nanded Waghala municipal corporation election 2017 was held on Wednesday and the results will be announced on Thursday. The voter turnout for the civic body polls stood at 60 per cent. For the first time in a municipal election Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) mechanism was used for Nanded polls on Wednesday

Congress that is currently ruling the civic body is seeking to retain it while the BJP, that has been thumping all other parties in most local body polls is seeking to seize power in Nanded. The Shiv Sena, that stood a distant second during the last elections, is fighting for relevance.

The fact that former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan is spearheading his party in the elections shows the importance attached to Nanded municipal corporation. The constituency is, after all, one that Ashok Chavan's father late Shankarrao Chavan nurtured. Devendra Fadnavis has led the BJP's high pitched battle for the civic body election.

During the last election, the Congress had won 41 seats of the 81 in the corporation. The Shiv Sena stood a distant second with 14 while the BJP won only 2 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP won 10 seats, AIMIM won 11, one seat was won by an independent candidate and two more by other parties. The BJP that has been riding high on poll success is sure to recreate the magic in Nanded while the Congress is keen on protecting its bastion.
