* On May 16, 2008, 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead with her throat slit in her bedroom in the Talwars' Noida residence (L-32 in Jalvayu Vihar). Initially, 45-year-old Hemraj, family's domestic help, was the main suspect, but the next day, his body was found on the terrace of Talwar's apartment.

* Soon, Uttar Pradesh police moved the needle of suspicion at the Talwars and said Rajesh, the father, had murdered the two after finding them in an compromising position. The accusations, without any forensic or material evidence, enraged the Talwars and their friends and they accused the cops of orchestrating a cover up.

* A week after Aarushi's murder, Rajesh Talwar was arrested and spent 60 days in jail before getting bail.

* As the state police drew flak over shoddy investigations, the then chief minister, Mayawati, handed over the probe to the CBI.

* However the probe saw sensational twists and turns when two CBI investigators reached opposite conlusions on the basis of more or less the same evidence. The first team led by Arun Kumar claimed a breakthrough on the basis of "scientific evidence" and arrested three men - Talwar's compounder Krishna and two domestic workers in the neighbourhood, Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal. But the agency failed to chargesheet the accused, resulting in their discharge.

Allahabad high court to decide fate of Talwars in Aarushi-Hemraj murder case

The Allahabad high court on Thursday is likely to decide the fate of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, serving a life term for murdering their daughter, Aarushi, and domestic help Hemraj in 2008.

* In 2009, the CBI handed over the investigation to a new team, which recommended closing the case due to critical gaps in investigation. Based on circumstantial evidence, it named Rajesh Talwar as the sole suspect, but refused to charge him due to lack of evidence.

* But the CBI special court rejected the closure of the case and ordered prosecution of the parents on the basis of existing evidence, leading to their eventual conviction in 2013.

* On November 26, 2013, a day after their conviction, the couple were awarded life sentence by a special CBI court in Ghaziabad. Since then, they are serving their jail term in Ghaziabad's Dasna jail.

* A division bench of the high court comprising justices B K Narayana and AK Mishra had reserved its judgement on September 7 on the appeal filed by the dentist couple, fixing October 12 as the date for the verdict. The court had earlier reserved its judgment on January 9 but resumed hearing of the appeal on August 1 to clarify certain points.

* The probe into Aarushi's murder case led to several conspiracy theories. A bollywood film and a book have been written on the case.
