Man held for stealing Rs 32 lakh from Delhi Metro station cash counter

A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 32 lakh from the cash counter of Jhandewalan Metro Station Wednesday, police said. The man, Kamal Kumar, had worked with a security company, engaged in collecting cash from Metro station counters for a year, before quitting.

DCP (Metro) Pankaj Kumar Singh told The Indian Express that Kumar was arrested from south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. A case was registered at Rajouri Garden Metro Police Station on May 22, when employees found a bag missing from the cash counter at Jhandewalan station. The cash was collected from counters and was supposed to be deposited in a bank, said police.

During investigation, CCTV footages were scanned. A man, who was later identified as Kumar, was seen walking with the bag in his hand. Teams under the supervision of inspector Dinesh Kumar was formed and a search for Kumar was launched.

On Wednesday, following a tip-off, police reach his rented accommodation in Malviya Nagar, where he was staying with his wife, and arrested him. Police said Kumar has another wife in Agra, where he visited several times while he was on the run. Police said Rs 11 lakh was recovered from the house and he splurged most of the stolen money on his wives. He visited 10 states in the past few months to evade arrest, police added.
