A Chennai-based trust fighting for “Indic civil liberties” Thursday moved the Supreme Court requesting it to reconsider the decision to ban firecrackers ahead of Diwali saying the religious and cultural aspects of the issue were not considered while passing the order.

The plea was mentioned by advocates Sai Deepak Iyer and Suvidutt MS before a Bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Navin Sinha, which directed it to be listed for hearing before the appropriate Bench on Friday. The petitioner contended that cultural and religious sentiments associated with Diwali “do not appear to have been placed by the Union of India before this… Court…”

“The beliefs… form part of rights of Indic communities under Article 25,” the Trust submitted.
