The 28-year-old software engineer, who was found in a pool of blood early on Monday near the Chocolate Factory in Bengaluru, was stabbed four times by two men after his two-wheeler scraped against theirs, police have said.

The Bengaluru Police on Tuesday arrested one of the men with a criminal record in connection with Pranay Mishra’s murder. Mishra, who belonged to Odisha’s Bhubaneswar, was attacked while he was on his way to his partner’s house.

Passersby found the Accenture employee and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

While the police initially suspected that personal enmity could have been the motive for the murder, deputy commissioner of police (southeast) MB Boralingaiah said it was a case of road rage.

“There was a minor collision between the two-wheelers ridden by the victim and Karthik and Arun. This led to an angry exchange between them,” Boralingaiah said.

Karthik demanded Rs 500 for the damage from Mishra, who refused to pay.

“The accused then chased Mishra and attacked him,” Boralingaiah said.

The police earlier told the Hindustan Times that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras near the crime scene were not of any help. However, other cameras came to their aid and they were able to identify the registration of the two-wheeler of the two men.

When police tried to arrest the accused, they resisted and threw stones. The police fired two shots in the air and at Karthik’s legs. However, Arun managed to escape.

A police inspector also suffered injuries in the exchange.

A manhunt has been launched for Arun.
