CWC meet soon to clear Rahul Gandhi’s elevation schedule

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will be held soon to give the final push to Rahul Gandhi's elevation as the new party president.
CWC is expected to give the final clearance to the tentative schedule for electing the new party president, which has already been submitted to party president Sonia Gandhi by Congress' central election authority (CEA) headed by Mullappally Ramachandran.
Even as these formalities are getting underway, the traditional Congress organisational orchestra has started setting the atmospherics for the elevation, with several newly constituted members of the Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs), which constitute the electoral colleges for electing the party chief, having started passing unanimous resolutions for electing Gandhi as the new party president.
While the PCCs of Delhi, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Goa and West Bengal have already passed such resolutions, many others are in the process of doing the same. UP PCC members are due to meet on Thursday. Barring a couple of states such as Kerala, PCCs in other states have already submitted the list of their members.
As ET had reported earlier, CEA has proposed that the election process be held from October 10 to October 26. Since there was a slight delay in Sonia Gandhi's return to Delhi after a brief stay and rest in Goa, the CEA members could meet her only on Monday. CWC can clear the schedule as it is or by making minor changes if necessary.
Once the election culminates with Gandhi's elevation as the party chief, an All India Congress Committee plenary session is expected to be held in November-December for his ceremonial assumption of office and for election of the new CWC.
