Press Trust of India  |  New Delhi

A teachers' body today moved the High seeking direction to the to to grant minimum pay of over Rs 17,000 to all trained graduate teachers (TGT) in schools as per the 6th pay commission recommendations.

The plea came up for hearing before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, which asked the counsel for to take instructions on the matter and inform it before January 17 next year.

The PIL filed by teachers' body, Adhyapak Shakti Manch, said the TGTs under the Directorate of Education (DoE) are entitled to a minimum pay of Rs 17,140 but the has interpreted the schedule of pay-fixation Rules, 2008, to mean that those teachers who were appointed on or after January 1, 2006 were entitled to this pay.

It said the government's DoE has not granted the minimum pay of Rs 17,140 to all TGTs as on January 1, 2006 as per the recommendations of the 6th pay commission and illegally refixed their pay scales.

The plea said if the petition is allowed, it will benefit a large number of teachers and avoid unnecessary litigation.
