Dogs chase my bike, what should I do?

I notice street dogs running after me when I ride a bike. I understand it’s their natural instinct, but it can be dangerous for the rider as I have also had instances where I have lost balance and almost fell off my bike. Could you tell me how to handle the situation when they run after bikes?
— Shrama

Hi Shrama,

Dogs have a natural prey drive to chase moving things and usually these incidents end harmlessly with the dog giving up. However, it is quite unnerving for the rider and could result in injury for both parties. As in all cases around dogs, try to remain calm and just drive on and the dog will usually give up the chase once you cross their perceived territory.

If the dogs are someone’s pet, talk to the owner to train his dog. If they are strays and they live near the place where you frequent, it is a good idea to spend some time to get to know them. Stop near them without your bike for a few days regularly and maybe a packet of biscuits will teach them to trust you and not chase you when you pass by. Educate the neighbourhood so that they don’t aggravate the situation by taunting or hurting the dogs.

If the dogs approach more aggressively, it is time to get defensive. Outrunning them is an option if you can do so without losing control. However, it is a good idea to get off and confront the dogs calmly by putting your bike in between yourself and the dogs as a shield. Sometimes this is enough to deter the dogs to move away and when they stop harassing you, slowly move away without any sudden movements.

If the dogs continue to attack, hide behind your bike to create an enclosure for yourself so that the dogs cannot reach you. Shout for help if you are in a place where there are houses. Curl up on the floor and cover your face and stomach, exposing less critical areas like the back of your arms and the rest to the dogs. Throwing rocks or stones and whatever you can lay your hands on could help you buy some time to get away.

If bitten, do not ignore the injury, clean up and seek medical attention immediately. Contact any animal welfare organisations active in your area who can work with you in addressing the situation.
