Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that coding is the best foreign language that a student in any country can learn, qz.com reported on Monday. Cook, who is on a tour to France this week, made his remarks in a video interview with French outlet Konbini. “If I were a French student and I were 10 years old, I think it would be more important to learn coding than English. I’m not telling people not to learn English—but this is a language that you can [use to] express yourself to 7 billion people in the world. I think coding should be required in every public school in the world,” he was quoted as saying by qz.com.

The tech leader, who is also scheduled to meet  French president Emmanuel Macron,  added that programming encourages students of all disciplines to be inventive and experimental.  “It’s not just for the computer scientists. “Creativity is in the front seat; technology is in the backseat,” he said.

However, report also said that Cook had gone for the interview to promote the company’s own programming language Swift. It further adds that Apple would like developers to use for building apps within its own product ecosystem.

Reuters report that Cook recently went out of his way to single out a small French firm behind innovative features in the latest iPhones. Cook paid a surprise visit to Eldim, a Normandy-based firm that develops optical technology, used in the facial recognition system inside new top-of-the-line iPhone X smartphones due out next month.
