NEW DELHI: Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot said today that the government was continuously monitoring NGOs that received grants from the ministry and that it had "initiated action" against errant organisations.

Chairing a meeting of the consultative committee of the ministry, Gehlot appreciated the efforts of the NGOs, but expressed concern over the wrong activities done by a few.

The monitoring of grants to NGOs is a continuous process. And the ministry has initiated action against the errant NGOs, an official statement quoted Gehlot as saying.

The social justice and empowerment ministry gives grants to various non-government organisations (NGOs) working for the welfare of Schedule Castes, other backward classes and the elderly, and on drugs de-addiction.

The minister also laid emphasis on transparency in implementation of various welfare schemes.

At the meeting, various presentations were made on the grants given to NGOs.

Ram Das Athawale and Vijay Sampla, both Ministers of State for Social Justice, were also present in the meeting.

It was also attended by senior officials of the ministry and MPs from various parties, who are members of a parliamentary panel.
