Extending benefits of the 7th Pay Commission, the Cabinet on Wednesday revised pay scales of around 8 lakh teachers in central and state universities. The approved pay scales will be applicable with effect from January 1, 2016, official Twitter account of the Press Information Bureau said. The move will benefit 7.58 lakh professors, assistant professors and others, Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar said after a cabinet meeting, where the decision was taken. The hike would be anywhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000, he said.
The revision in pay is also applicable for other equivalent academic staff of higher educational institutions under the purview of the statutory education body, the University Grants Commission, (UGC) and in centrally-funded technical institutions.
The decision comes after the implementation of the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission for Central government employees.
The salary revision would register an entry pay growth between 22 per cent and 28 per cent. The revision in salary will cover 119 centrally-funded technical institutions like IITs and IIMs, among others.
A total of 7.58 lakh teachers and equivalent academic staff in 106 universities/colleges funded by the UGC/ Ministry of Human Resource Development, 329 universities funded by state governments, and 12,912 government-and private-aided colleges affiliated to state public universities, will benefit from this move.
The government hopes that the new measures will help attract and retain talented teachers, and also boost quality of higher education. (With PTI inputs)
