Delhi duo, who cheated Amazon by claiming refunds on 166 phones, arrested

Two people had falsely obtained refunds from online shopping site Amazon on 166 mobile phones have been arrested by Delhi Police. The accused identified as Shivam Chopra and his accomplice Sachin Jain were arrested from Tri Nagar.

The police have further claimed to have recovered Rs 12 lakh in cash, 25 mobile phones and 40 bank passbooks. “The accused had ordered expensive phones like Samsung, Iphone, One Plus. Chopra had opted for cash on delivery on all their orders and would pay through gift vouchers. He then would falsely claim that he never received the phone and ask for a refund in the form of a gift voucher,” said a police officer.

The case came to light in June when the complainant in the case, Syed Ishaq (36) filed a complaint on behalf of Amazon Seller Services Private Limited alleging that a total of 166 orders for mobile phones were placed between April 2017 and May 2017. After an inquiry in the matter, the police registered a case in August.

On the basis of the mobile numbers used to make calls, questioning of locals and with the help of Amazon delivery boys, the police identified Chopra and arrested him on October 6. Police siad Chopra revealed that he purchased all the SIM cards from Jain who runs a telecom store in the neighborhood.

Chopra used to pay Rs 150 for one SIM and purchased about 150 pre-activated SIMs, police said.

To make the purchases, the accused had used 141 numbers and 48 different customer accounts and a refund in full was sought on all orders, the officer said. The accused would always put a different location near his locality for every order. Later, when the delivery boy would get lost Shivam would guide them to his house and after receiving the order he would call up Amazon and claim that he received empty boxes and ask for the refund, the police claimed.
