A public meeting was held this evening in the Kirloskar Theatre [in Poona] under the presidency of the Hon’ble Mr. Kamat to support the Hon’ble Mr. Paranjypye’s resolution moved by him in the last session of the Bombay Legislative Council asking the Government to reinstate the modi script in official records and also the Hon’ble Mr. Patel’s bill to amend the Medical Registration Act of 1912. The resolution about modi script was proposed by Rao Bahadur Kashinath Narayan Sane and was supported by not less than nine speakers representing a variety of professions and trades. Among the several grounds mentioned in support of the request for the restoration of modi, one is to the following effect, that the Government must not put the possible convenience of a handful of their functionaries above the deeply cherished sentiment of the people. About the existence of sentiment in favour of modi there cannot be a shadow of doubt. The second principal resolution supporting Mr. Patel in his efforts to get the Medical Registration Act amended was proposed by Dr. Sir Desai, L.M.S., and supported by Dr. Deva, L.M.S. There were four more speeches on the same. Regret was expressed in the resolution at the attempts made by the Medical Council to remove from the register the names of such of the medical practitioners as may be associated in whatever way with the Ayurvedic or Unani system of medicine which ancient systems minister to the vast masses of people in the country. Both the resolutions were enthusiastically passed by the meeting. The President was authorised to wire the resolutions to the Government.
