Bollywood box office report: Movies that entered Rs 100 crore club in 2017
For the audience, if a movie enters the coveted Rs 100 crore club, it's worth a watch and this is why box office numbers have gained prominence these days. The year 2017 is a tale of hit and misses for Bollywood. While Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan starrers failed to attract the audience to the theaters, it was SS Rajamouli's magnum opus Baahubali: The Conclusion which emerged as the superhit of the year. Some multi-starrers like Judwaa 2 and low-budget movies like Bareilly Ki Barfi too outperformed at the ticket counters changing the dynamics of the film trade. Adopting the hit formula of recreating the magic of yesteryear with a twist to match up to the expectation of present generation, filmmaker David Dhawan came up with a remake of his own 1997 hit, Judwaa. The reworked version of the movie Judwaa 2 starring Varun Dhawan, Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez managed to tickle the funnybones of the audience and within 8 days of its release, the movie entered the Rs 100 crore club. Still having a successful run at the theaters, Judwaa 2 has minted Rs 119.09 crore until now. Also, the film has surpassed the collection of Varun's another movie Badrinath Ki Dulhania which collected Rs 116.06 crore earlier in the year.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead role collected Rs 134.22 crore. Within a short period of 8 days, the movie made a place in the Rs 100 crore club. The movie directed by Shree Narayan Singh was a satirical take on the issue of open defecation in India. The movie was loved so much so that it got its first television premiere on Doordarshan. The movie became the second film of Akshay this year to enter the club. Jolly LLB 2 also made it to the club as it made Rs 117 crore.
Despite being the lowest earner in Salman Khan's Eid releases, Tubelight made it to the Rs 100 crore club with Rs 119.26 crore in its kitty. The comeback of Bajrangi Bhaijaan duo Kabir Khan and Salman did not turn out to be as impressive as expected and received a mixed reaction from the audience as well as critics. It took six days for the Salman Khan starrer to enter the coveted club.
Baahubali: The Conclusion became the highest grosser of all times. The film starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati has broken a series of records and made several of its own. Leave aside the 100-crore club, SS Rajamouli film reached the milestone of Rs 500 crore. The total collection of the movie is Rs 510.98 crore in India.
Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan rom-com Badrinath Ki Dulhania crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in 14 days. Its total collection is Rs 116.68 crore, more than the lifetime collection of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Rs 76.81 crore. The film was released on around 3,000 screens and is estimated to be made on a budget of Rs 45-50 crore.
Akshay Kumar's courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2 was a hit. It managed to mint Rs 100.37 crore in 12 days with its total collection being Rs 117 crore. The brilliant performances from actors Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor added the charm to the movie which was made with an economical budget of Rs 45 crore.
Rakesh Roshan directorial Kaabil starring son Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam earned Rs 103.84 crore. It took 19 days for the movie to make it to the Rs 100 crore club. It faced a clash at the box-office with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees which released on the same day.
Shah Rukh Khan emerged as the true Raees of the box office with his Republic Day release Raees. The film collected Rs 137.51 crore and entered the Rs 100 crore club in just six days. But the SRK charm failed to work on the audience in his second release of the year Jab Harry Met Sejal which had to settle for a mere Rs 64.33 crore.
