Sharmila will receive the honour on October 12 during the opening ceremony of the festival. The actor’s journey in movies began in 1959 at the age of 16 with Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece, The World of Apu. The following year, she again teamed up with Ray for Devi. She went on to do a couple of more Bengali films, before Shakti Samanta cast her in Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), which became her first Hindi movie. The director gave Tagore some of her biggest career hits like Evening in Paris (1967), Aradhana (1969) and Amar Prem (1972). Also, her performances in these films were unanimously appreciated and by the ’70s, the actor became one of the reigning stars of Hindi cinema.

Her first National Award came in 1975 for Gulzar’s poignant love story, Mausam, co-starring Sanjeev Kumar. Sharmila received second such honour in 2003 for Goutam Ghose’s Abar Aranye. She led the Censor Board of Film Certification from 2004 to 2001. The actor served as one of the International Competition’s Jury Members at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India.

Last year at the Mumbai Film Festival, it was veteran director-writer Sai Paranjpye, known for helming popular films like Sparsh and Chashme Buddoor, who was feted with Indian Excellence in Cinema Award.
