NEW DELHI: BJP, known for support base primarily in urban areas, made inroads in rural Maharashtra by winning more than half of the gram panchayat head posts and 13 out of 21 municipal corporations. It also wrested six out of eight local bodies in Gujarat where assembly elections are round the corner.

In a boost to the Devendra Fadnavis-led government in Maharashtra, BJP won 1,457 gram panchayat seats. Congress came a distant second with 301, followed by Shiv Sena (222) and NCP (194). BJP also won a majority in 13 of the 21 municipal corporations. It won 871 corporator seats, while Shiv Sena managed less than half at 828. Congress won 325 corporator posts while NCP got 252. Even in the zilla parishad polls, BJP got 406 seats, followed by NCP at 360, Congress (309) and Shiv Sena (271).

Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the results show that BJP is the first choice not only in cities but also among farmers, peasants, labourers and the poor in rural areas. However, BJP fared poorly in Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde’s constituency.

In Gujarat, BJP won six out of eight by-polls for local bodies spread over seven districts. The party claimed this was an endorsement of the development undertaken by the state government. “People have chosen BJP on the issue of development. They have shown their trust in Modi,” Javadekar said.
