19:23 EDT 10 Oct 2017 | PR Newswire

COSTA MESA, Calif., July 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The names of as many as 15,000 children who have died will be carried in The Compassionate Friends' 13th annual Walk to Remember®, Sunday, July 22 in Costa Mesa, California. Approximately 1400-1500 grieving the death of a child will walk the two-mile route. The Walk to Remember is a cornerstone of The Compassionate Friends' 35th National Conference/5th International Gathering, which starts Friday, July 20, and all parents, siblings, and grandparents mourning the loss of a child are invited to attend.

"The Walk to Remember, as well as the conference, are ways in which we remember those children who died too soon," says Patricia Loder, executive director of the 640-chapter national nonprofit organization. "We gather together in a nurturing atmosphere of acceptance, validation, understanding, and hope."

Thousands of names have been submitted online prior to the July 13th deadline to The Compassionate Friends National Office to be carried by volunteers in the Walk to Remember. Organizers estimate that the names of as many as 15,000 children who have died across the country will be carried by those participating in the Walk. Registration and a signed waiver of liability is required to participate in the Walk. Registration starts at 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 22. The Walk will start at 8 a.m. from the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa, host hotel for the conference.

"People are flying in from across the country to participate in this Walk," says Mrs. Loder, who herself is a twice bereaved parent. "We are doing everything possible to make them feel comfortable. Anyone who would like to attend, but has not yet registered, may do so at the conference. We welcome them to join us in honoring the memories of all children no longer physically with us."
