Coimbatore: Demand for houses and land in their names dominated the grievance day meeting for transgenders at the district collectorate here on Tuesday.

Around 107 transgenders from across the district attended the meeting. A majority of them demanded houses or pattas in their name, said the district social welfare officer, Sherin Philip. "They mainly demanded houses. We have forwarded their demands to the revenue department," she said.

Some transgenders also urged the government to speed up processing of their applications for ration cards and voter identity cards.

"They also requested for medical certificates and welfare board identity cards, which have to be issued by the transgender board. All their requests were forwarded to the concerned departments," Sherin Philip said.

Special grievance meetings for transgenders are usually held at the district collectorate twice a year.

Tansgenders also attend the general grievance day meetings held every Monday.
