Rajasthan female-male college student ratio shoots up by 23.23 per cent

According to a report by the Department of Higher Education, there were a total of 4.67 lakh girls and 4.65 lakh boys enrolled at colleges in Rajasthan this academic year.

The Department of Higher Education of Rajasthan has found that there are more girls enrolled in colleges across the state than boys. With the records showing a 23.23 per cent increase in the number of female students in higher educational institutions in the academic year of 2016-17 compared to the previous year.

According to a report released by the department, there were a total of 4.67 lakh girls and 4.65 lakh boys enrolled at colleges in Rajasthan this academic year. There were 7.52 lakh students enrolled at colleges in 2015-16, among whom there were 3.82 lakh boys and 3.70 lakh girls. Boys had a recorded growth at 4.4 per cent while girls had a growth at 7.8 per cent in the span of a year.

Earlier in 2005-06, there were about 3.27 lakh students enrolled in colleges across the state among whom there were 1.26 lakh girls. The current 4.67 lakh female students are a significant leap since that year. The report stated that there were 54 girls enrolled for every 100 boys in 2000-01 and this ratio has risen to 101 girls for every 100 boys this year, which is the highest ratio the state has witnessed so far.

The most opted stream among students of the state is Arts with about 65.37 per cent of the student enrolled in it. Among them 29 per cent are boys and 34 per cent are girls. The science stream is the next most popular option as 21.07 per cent— which includes 12 per cent of the boys and 9 per cent of the girls— have opted for this stream.
