Google today is celebrating the 156th birthday of the pioneering Norwegian, Fridtjof Nansen. Born on October 10, 1861, Nansen was a legendary adventurer. Nansen had once said, “The difficult is what takes a little time; the impossible is what takes a little longer,” according to Reuters. He explored the world’s unknown terrain and broke new ground as an international humanitarian. Apart from being a humanitarian, he was an explorer, scientist, diplomat and also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He was an exemplary skier and ice skater as well. In the year 1888, he became the first man to lead an expedition across the snow-capped interior of Greenland, reported the Mirror. He won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his North Pole expedition of 1893–1896.
Because of his work to free hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war and repatriate refugees, Nansen became one of the world’s great humanitarians, reported the Mirror. He created the Nansen Passport, which also found its place on the doodle prepared by the search giant Google. This passport was a travel document that allowed stateless refugees to emigrate and resettle. Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for helping those without a voice find a home.
The online search giant Google today marked Nansen’s birthday and dedicated a special and a creative doodle to this legendary adventurer. A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepage that is intended to celebrate holidays, events, achievements and people.
