1/5Don't have a balcony? Set up an urban garden!
Gardens, usually relegated to the outdoors, have now made their way into our apartments. As the trend gains momentum, here are the many ways in which to transform your space into an urban oasis.
2/5Vertical garden
Considering your requirement and the space available, there are various ways to adopt urban gardening. “A vertical garden is one of the most common ways where plants are installed in panels, which are mounted on indoor or outdoor walls. There are movable green wall structures that can slide over any hard surface; these can be placed against a wall or in the middle of a room. These green walls are quick to install and easy to maintain,“ says Sujit Jain, chairman and managing director, Netsurf Network.
3/5Indoor Garden
Nowadays, most people who garden prefer an indoor setting.“One can experiment to a great extent with indoor gardens. It's even possible to add elements like a swing, fountain, lights, pebbled flooring and open skylight,“ says Harjith D. Bubber, MD and CEO, Rivali Park, CCI Projects.
4/5Meditteranean Garden
This type of garden is great if you wish to highlight a part of your patio. “For a Mediterraneanstyled garden, begin with terracotta pots. To create a landscape similar to the Mediterranean, incorporate shrubs, plants with ample foliage, citrus plants and herbs,“ says Bubber.
5/5Container garden
These days, even containers are recycled and used as pots in gardens. Depending on the size of the pot, a variety of plants and herbs can be easily grown at home. To do this, select a suitable container--from flower pots in different shapes, old plastic boxes that can be recycled, boxes made of wood, disposable food containers and so on. Pierce holes at the base of these containers to ensure efficient drainage, thereby ensuring a healthy life for the plants. It's always a good idea to opt for light coloured containers as opposed to the darker ones as they tend to absorb heat, impacting growth of the plants. Mix soil with organic fertilizers for stronger growth of plants. Water them frequently, but do not over water them or allow water to stagnate.
