A truck transporting nuclear fuel waste fell into a roadside ditch at Kadra Naithisavara in the taluk on Monday.
By Tuesday evening, the heavy vehicle was partially lifted out of clay into which the wheel had got stuck, with the trailer yet to be pulled out.
The mound of clay had to be dug using earthmovers to make way for other vehicles on the Karwar-Mallapura-Ilkal state highway.
Bound for Tamil Nadu
Used fuel-grade uranium was being transported under heavy security from the Kaiga nuclear power plant near here to Tamil Nadu for enrichment, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it slipped into the ditch.
Two vehicles transport the fuel waste every month through Karwar, Kaiga officials said.
