Disposable dental syringes

There has been a significant increase in the clinical use of disposable devices in recent decades. Various single-use items are currently used in dentistry. These include anesthetic carpules, syringes, surgical blades, cotton rolls, and prophylaxis trays among others.

According to Neha Noopur, a lead orthopedics and medical devices research analyst from Technavio, “A single-use disposable item is designed and manufactured to be used by one patient one time and disposed of afterward. As these items are neither easy to clean nor tolerant to heat, they are not proposed for cleaning or sterilization, and hence are not recommended for reuse on another patient.”

Non-disposable dental syringes

In countries where shortages are common and distribution systems are not arranged, non-disposable or sterilizable syringes are used. For instance, if health professionals run out of sterilized syringes, they can resterilize those syringes using a steam sterilizer or autoclave. Most health professionals, including dental practitioners, use scissors, suture needles and thread, forceps, speculums, and other instruments that need to be sterilized before being used in procedures.

“Non-disposable syringes have been shown to be associated with several problems. For example, non-disposable syringes are dependent on the availability of adequate equipment and health worker training, without which the sterilization process may be incomplete. In some cases, the cultures accumulated from the sterilized syringe needles have been found to have growth of microorganisms, while sometimes they are associated with the transmission of hepatitis B. Sterilization practices could be enhanced through adequate training and the use of precise equipment,” adds Neha.

Safety dental syringes

Dental syringes are unique in their use, and the procedures in dentistry require multiple injections intraorally as well as extraorally, which is always associated with the risk of NSI. Most of the percutaneous injuries in dentistry occur extraorally, among which, the maximum is caused by unintentional contact with burs followed by sharp instruments and needles. Intraoral injuries, which can be considered non-preventable, are most frequently caused by syringe needles.

Safety syringes are safety devices which can help prevent accidental NSIs in medicine and dentistry. Needles and syringes with safety-engineered devices to help avoid unintentional NSIs are, as of now, in their third generation of development. First-generation devices were normally retrofitted systems with add-on shields, sheaths, or caps that secured an uncovered needle.
