Ten more borewells and six wells to be dug in Palar

The Tambaram Municipality has planned a ₹240-crore water supply improvement scheme in 2018-19.

With an increase in population, it has felt the need to improve its supply mechanism to provide water to residents at least on alternate days, said an official.

A detailed project report has been prepared and it will be submitted to the State government to get the required financial support through the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme of the Union government, the official added.

Ten more borewells and six big wells would be dug at the Palar river basin to get an additional 60 lakh litres of water and efforts will be taken to get 360 lakh litres of water from desalination plants in Nemmeli.

For providing water supply, pipelines will be constructed and places for such works have been identified, he said.

A meeting was called by the officials, but it did not evoke the expected response.

However, municipal officials gave details of the project’s features, which included construction of additional overhead tanks with a capacity of 20 lakh litres and replacement of distribution mains.

The municipality, which has 39 wards, gets less than its requirement from its main source, Palar river in Chengalpattu region.

After the meeting, Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja said the meeting was not properly convened and many people were not informed.

“The officials are showing wrong data about the present water supply scheme. When I raised a few questions, they could not provide me a proper reply or technical details about the new scheme. No one could understand the details provided by them. It is a mere eyewash to conduct such consultative meetings,” Mr. Raja said.
