Tension escalating in a brewing diplomatic crisis between Turkey and the U.S. after both the Nato allies suspended visa services in a tit for tat fallout. The U.S. mission to Turkey on Sunday (September 09) suspended all non-immigrant services following the arrest of a U.S. consulate employee in Istanbul on Wednesday (September 04). He is accused of links to Fethullah Gulen, a cleric who the Turkish government blames for last year's failed coup. The self exiled Islamic preacher lives in Pennsylvania, his extradition to Turkey has been sought to little avail. In retaliation for the U.S. visa cut back, Turkey's embassy in Washington blocked new applications from U.S. citizens in a statement using almost identical language. Thousands of people have been detained in a crackdown since the failed coup, including the American Christian missionary Andrew Brunson. The U.S. says he's has been wrongfully imprisoned and has called for his release. But Turkey has used him as a bargaining chip- saying he could be freed if the U.S. hands over Fetulllah Gulen. And more frayed relations over Syria where the U.S. support Kurdish YPG fighters: among their most effective partners in the fight against Islamic State. Turkey says the group is outlawed.
