Padmavati: How absence of romance between Ranveer, Deepika might impact the film

Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Saawariya and Guzaarish — in all these Sanjay Leela Bhansali films, the chemistry that the lead couple shared was pretty much the focal point.

Whether it was Salman Khan-Manisha Koirala, Salman-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan-Aishwarya, Ranbir Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya, the lead couple's chemistry has always been the highlight of Bhansali's films. It is as crucial to his cinema as are the embellished costumes, spectacular production design and opulent music.

Bhansali's last two films, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani, were not any different as the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone was magnetic in its superlative, so much so that it even spilled into their personal lives. Bhansali is credited with making the two actors look their passionate best in both the films.

Also, in both the films, they have had scenes together that showed a range of emotions, from rage to mischief and from love to separation. They have gone to war, have had verbal face-offs, intimate lovemaking scenes and rib-tickling foreplay.

In his next offering, the period drama Padmavati, Bhansali has cast Padukone and Singh and placed them at warring ends yet again. However, unlike the previous two times, the third time will not be a charm.

Both of them will not have the same dimension in their relationship as history bears testimony to the fact that Padukone's character of Rani Padmini and Singh's character of Alauddin Khilji were not romantically involved.

Instead, in Padmavati, Singh will be cast opposite Aditi Rao Hydari (and reportedly also opposite Jim Sarbh) whereas Padukone will be seen as the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh, played to regal perfection by Shahid Kapoor. The trailer shows that Padmini and Ratan Singh share a relationship mounted on Rajput pride and thus, it is unlikely that she will turn to Khilji.

Also, Shri Rajput Karni Sena had alleged that Bhansali has distorted historical facts in Padmavati by placing Ranveer and Deepika's characters in a romantic relationship. However, both Ranveer and Deepika denied the rumours and clarified that there is no distortion of history in the film's narrative.

It is only disheartening for their fans that the 'it' couple - Ranveer and Deepika - will not be seen romancing each other on the big screen for a third time anytime soon. They will not recreate the moments magically created by Bhansali in the songs 'Lahu Mung Lag Gaya' and 'Laal Ishq' from Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela.

Their chemistry may remain glaringly missing from the Padmavati trailer but that certainly does not detract from the scale and drama that Bhansali has presented in the three-minute video. The release of the film will show the number of times, if at all, Deepika and Ranveer will share the same frame.

The fans are eagerly awaiting their reunion after their characters die in the climax of both Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani. But it is almost certain that they will have to wait a little longer as Deepika and Ranveer will have anything but sparks flowing between the two in Padmavati.

Padmavati is co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 Pictures. It is slated to release on 1 December.
