NEW DELHI: Nifty Metal index was showing a volatile temperament during the afternoon trade on Monday.

The index opened at 3,714 and added 34 points to touch 3,748, but gains proved to be short-lived as the losses in Nalco, Moil, JSW Steel and Vedanta weighed on the index.

The Nifty Metal index was trading flat at 3,711 around 1.15 pm (IST), while benchmark Nifty was 0.06 per cent up at 9,986. BSE Sensex was trading 0.09 per cent up at 31,844 around the same time.

Shares of Jindal Steel & Power (up 4.03 per cent), APL Apollo Tubes (up 2.10 per cent), Coal India (up 1.19 per cent) and Tata Steel (up 1.03 per cent) were the top gainers in the Nifty Metal index.

MOIL (down 1.47 per cent), Nalco (down 1.47 per cent), JSW Steel (down 1.05 per cent), Vedanta (down 0.98 per cent) declined up to 1 per cent.

Among the 51 stocks in the Nifty index, 28 were trading in the green, while 22 were in red.

Shares of ICICI Bank, PowerGrid, SBI, Tata Power, REC, Coal India Ltd, Tata Steel, Vedanta Ltd, ITC, Ashok Leyland were among most traded securities on the National Stock Exchange.

Shares of TVS Electronics, GeeCee Ventures, Sanwaria Agro, Sree Rayalaseema, Marathon Nextgen, Alkyl Amines, MIRC Electronic, Gujarat Alkalie, Sundaram Brake and Nandan Denim hit their fresh 52-week highs in today's trade.
