‘Board has remained ineffective so far’

The Telangana Government has lodged a complaint with the Union Water Resources Ministry, alleging that the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) set up by the Centre under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act has been discriminating against it on the issues related to water sharing.

In a letter addressed to Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday, Telangana Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao has expressed dissatisfaction over the working of KRMB so far although it has been in existence for over three years now. Enumerating several instances and examples in support of his contention, Mr Harish Rao stressed the need for steps for enhancing the board’s effectiveness, highlighting that it had biased attitude against Telangana in the matter of water release orders and also showing partiality in installing the telemetry equipment.

Mr. Rao drew the attention of Mr. Gadkari to the agreement arrived at in 2015 between AP and Telangana for sharing water in the ratio of 512:299 TMC ft till the matter was settled and notified by the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal. Stating that water was one of the main reasons that led to formation of Telangana state, Mr. Rao said they expected expeditious determination of its share in water, based on demand, catchment area, yield and others.
