OnePlus 5 goes out of stock in many markets; new 18:9 display flagship seems likely

OnePlus announced the launch of the special edition JCC+ model of its current flagship smartphone recently. Though this model comes with similar specs as the OnePlus 5, it is restricted only to the 8GB variant of the device and is limited to select countries only.

OnePlus 5 goes out of stock in many markets

In the meantime, the regular OnePlus 5 seems to be out of stock in several countries such as Canada and the U.S. Many other countries have listed the Slate Gray variant of the smartphone as out of stock. It is only the Indian market that has both the 6GB and 8GB RAM variants and all the color options in stock. This should not be surprising as the OnePlus 5 units sold in the country as manufactured by the Oppo factory located in Uttar Pradesh.

For now, there is no evidence that OnePlus is working on a new phone though there are speculations regarding the same. This speculation is contradictory to an earlier report that pointed out that the company has canceled the OnePlus 5T for an early release of the OnePlus 6. So, we can infer that the out of stock issues might be due to some production or supply glitch.

If OnePlus is planning to release a new smartphone, we can expect the device to have a display that is influenced by the existing flagships from other companies with 18:9 aspect ratio. The other specifications might be similar to the OnePlus 5.

Given that OnePlus' sister companies such as Oppo and Vivo have also released or prepping full-screen smartphones, it should not be a big surprise to see OnePlus follow suit with an upcoming 18:9 display flagship in the coming months. Already, Vivo has the V7 Plus, X20 and X20 Plus with such screens and Oppo is prepping to launch the Oppo F5 with such a display in the coming weeks.
