Attacked by accused, police open fire in Kalaburagi

In a scuffle between rowdy-sheeters and the police, two police personnel and two rowdy-sheeters sustained injuries after the accused attacked a constable while resisting arrest near Dabarabad village on the outskirts of the Kalaburagi on Sunday morning.

Inspector General of Police (North Eastern Range) Alok Kumar said that two repeated offenders — Chetan (22) and Shivukumar (20) — were arrested. The accused were involved in eight criminal cases, including attempt to murder, dacoity and kidnap.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Circle Police Inspector James Menenjes chased both the assailants and arrested them after opening fire. RG Nagar Police Sub-Inspector Akka Mahadevi opened fire at Chetan after he attacked police constable Prahlad Kulkarni with lethal weapon injuring his left forearm, while Mr. Menenjes shot Shivukumar on his leg. A PSI Akka Mahadevi was also injured.

Both the police personnel were shifted to a private hospital and the accused were admitted to the District Government Hospital. A case has been registered at the rural police station
