Chef box office collection day 3: Will Saif Ali Khan’s film be able to thwart Judwaa 2’s winning streak?

Chef box office collection day 3: Saif Ali Khan film is suffering at the hands of Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2.

Saif Ali Khan’s Chef has been underperforming at the box office since its release on October 6. It had collected a meagre sum of Rs 1.05 crore on Friday and Rs 1.35 crore on Saturday. But even though the figures have seen a hike of more than 30 percent, the numbers are not quite impressive.

Off to a slow start, the film might just be added to Saif Ali Khan’s streak of failures in the last few years. If Chef continues to perform in a similar pattern on the last non-working day of the week i.e. Sunday, chances of it gaining pace will decrease exponentially. This Raja Menon directorial is also suffering at the hands of Judwaa 2, a David Dhawan remake of the original 1997 Judwaa. Despite this being Judwaa’s second week at the theaters, the film is going strong at the box office collecting a total of Rs 108.08 crore till now.

As tweeted by Taran Adarsh, “Chef shows limited growth on Day 2… 2-day total is extremely poor… Fri 1.05 cr, Sat 1.35 cr. Total: ₹ 2.40 cr. India biz,” Chef needs to pick up pace quite desperately. The coming days are also crucial in deciding the fate of the film at the theaters.

Trade analyst Girish Johar had earlier said, “To some extent, Judwaa 2 will remain a competition to Chef. It has done fantastic business and the mass has really loved the film. But Chef as new release has an edge over Judwaa 2. If Chef’s content is good and people actually like it, then the film may collect as much as Rs 15 crore by the end of the weekend.” But for a Rs 15 crore weekend, Chef now needs a total of about Rs 12 crore from Sunday, which is pretty much a Herculean task.

Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta had said this about the film in her mixed review, “Chef’ is a good-looking film, with good-looking people. The ingredients have been carefully assembled. Khan is ripe for real difference, playing a divorced, middle-aged man and a father to a young boy (Kamble), who is a natural. The leading lady (Janakiraman) has a smile that reaches her eyes: she feels organic in a way no one else does. And there’s a solid supporting cast: we see Chandan Roy Sanyal having fun, and an all-too-brief turn by the deliciously salt-and-pepper Milind Soman.”
