Designers Rikita Pujara and Ratna Shah knew each other since their college days.
Sharing a similiar passion for apparel designing, the duo came together to give wings to their dream. The label ‘Riraan’ was thus born three years ago.

In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, the designers talk about their latest collection,
life in the competitive world of fashion and more.

Tell us about your latest collection...

Ratna: Our latest collection is called ‘The Trousseau Twist’. The reason for choosing this name is because all the outfits in the collection can easily be a part of the bridal trousseau too. It is a quick wear and is an Indo-Western line. ‘Sharara jumpsuits, one- shoulder jumpsuits with attached ‘dupatta’ and stitched saris with palazzos are some of the designs one can look forward to. A mix of soft colours like blush pink, olive green, grey and navy blue that can be worn throughout the day in flowy fabrics like satin-georgette makes this collection a festival favourite.

What does your label focus on?
Ratna: Our creations are fusionwear. We primarily combine modern silhouettes with a dash of convention to keep the rich heritage of our tradition alive.

Three points you keep in mind while working on a collection...
Ratna: Colours, comfort and how good the designs would look on our customers regardless of their age.

How has your work changed over the last three years that you have been in the industry?
Ratna: When Rikita and I started this label three years ago, our designs were basic and traditional. However, today, we know the market comparatively better and what people are looking for. Most of our works are modern now. We incorporate the new trends.

Five must-haves in the festive wardrobe...
Rikita: ‘Anarkali’ with a cold or off shoulder is a good option during festivals. This apart, saris are a must-have. Silk ‘kurtis’ and palazzos and a fusion outfit are the other essentials for the festival season.

The fashion industry is a very competitive space, how do you deal with it considering you are new to the industry?
Rikita: With many young designers coming into the fashion industry, it has surely become very competitive. We, as a label, make sure to work hard and adapt the new trends. We try to create something new with every collection we work on.

Any word of advice for aspiring designers...
Be creative, trendy and original.
