A number of movies see disaster at the box office. A number of them fail and can’t even make business equal to their investment. However, these usually have one or two particular aspects attached to them – either they are not having a noted star cast or the they are so technical that viewers fail to understand them, or at times, they have a terrible storyline which neither offers Masala nor any insights. However, the failure of Saif Ali Khan’s newest film Chef in terms of business is surprising. The movie, which has made a business of a mere 2.40 cr in two days, is neither something which comes without a starcast, nor it has got a thumbs down from critics. In fact, many of the reviewers have given positive reactions to it. Also, the story presents a simple tale of man, who is chef, and his son.
On its first day, the movie had opened to a paltry Rs 1.05 crore which must have disappointed the makers. To add to makers’ worry, the second day also saw a collection of mere Rs 1.35 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter and wrote, “Chef shows limited growth on Day 2… 2-day total is extremely poor… Fri 1.05 cr, Sat 1.35 cr. Total: ₹ 2.40 cr. India biz.” Earlier too, Adarsh had Tweeted about movie’s terrible performance at box office. He had written: “Chef has a shockingly low start. Need to witness massive growth on Sat and Sun to sustain.”
The low numbers must have shocked makers and reviewers as the movie was expected to give some competition to Judwaa 2. Trade analyst Girish Johar had earlier expected big numbers from the film. “To some extent ‘Judwaa 2’ will remain a competition to ‘Chef’. It has done fantastic business and the mass has really loved the film. But ‘Chef’ as new release has an edge over ‘Judwaa 2’. If Chef’s content is good and people actually like it, then the film may collect as much as Rs 15 crore by the end of the weekend,” Johar was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. Saif Ali Khan-starrer Chef is the Indian remake of hit Hollywood film of the same name.
