Two persons died in an explosion in Nai Ki Mandi police station area of Agra on Sunday afternoon. Police said, prima facie, it appeared that the explosion was caused when firecrackers went off due to the heat.

The deceased have been identified as Ajay Kumar (27) and Sunny Jatav (21), residents of Bodhla locality in Agra. The incident occurred at Dhak ran crossing while they were transporting the crackers on a two-wheeler.

“Ajay’s family claims that he wanted to open a shop to sell firecrackers. It is possible that he was carrying a lot of firecrackers at the time. It is yet to be ascertained where they purchased the crackers from. A few unexploded firecrackers were recovered from the spot,” said Abdul Qadir, Circle Officer, Kotwali.

A forensics team collected evidence from the spot for examination, he added.

“We recovered the voter ID card of Ajay Kumar, which helped us and his family to identify him,” said Qadir, adding that Ajay used to supply goods to grocery shops, while Sunny ran a general store

When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police, Agra, Amit Pathak said, “Prima facie it appears that blast occurred following the explosion of firecrackers that the duo were carrying. Inquiry is still on.”
