Mexico and England are regarded as two of the favourites in this tournament. England pretty much justified that tag with a clinical performance against Chile. Now Mexico take on Iraq at the Salt Lake Stadium. Japan, on the other hand, take on Honduras. Honduras are making their fifth appearance in the tournament while Japan are making their 8th. Mexico will be starting their 13th match in the under 17 World Cup and Iraq only their second. Thus far, the bigger teams have impressed in the tournament, we will se how Mexico and Japan fare here.

51′: GOAL! Rodrigo De La Rosa scores and Mexico finally get the equaliser. Wave after wave of Mexican attacks has produced a goal.

HALF TIME: Iraq 1-0 Mexico. Dawood goal still remains the difference between the two sides. Mexico are dominating possession but Iraq are looking vicious on the counter. In Guwahati, Japan 4-1 Honduras, No shocks there

20′: Mexico get a chance to equalise as Marco Ruiz sends in a ball into the box, Jairo Torres meets it with his head and the Iraqiu keeper produces a brilliant save

16′: Mexico are behind! Mohammed Dawood the goalscorer for Iraq. One of the favourites to win this tournament have fallen behind against the Iraqis who are making only their second appearance. So far, the teams that were expected to win, are winning the fixtures. Can this be the first big shock of the tournament?

FULL TIME: Chile 0-4 England. England are one of the favourites to win this tournament and this match is only proof of it. They were quick to take the Chilean defence on and scored in the first five minutes. Then they were clinical, rarely getting overwhelmed by the Chilean attacks that came right after that goal. The big names of the team Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Angel Gomes all delivered. For Chile, it is back to the drawing board. In Guwahati, France beat New Caledonia 7-1. Six of those goals came in the first half and France could have pushed in more. They seemed to show some respect to the opposition and that is commendable.

90′: Foden slips it into the path of Morgan Gibbs White and the latter takes the shot, it comes off the post. Four minutes have been added on and some of the England players are cramping up. Its a surprise its happening only after the 80th minute, they have adjusted to Kolkata and how

81′: GOAL! Angel Gomes takes the resulting free kick and scores emphatically. The spot was about 30 yards from goal and curves it over the wall and into the top right-hand corner. Branco Provoste, who is now the stand-in goalkeeper, was rooted to his spot but that kick was so good and shaped so well that even Borquez wouldn’t have been able to wear it.

78′: Red card for Chilean goalkeeper Julio Borquez. Gomes with a piercing pass down the middle and Brewster is free, Borquez comes out of his line and the box, and trips Brewster, unable to touch the ball.

69: Big chance for England! Angel Gomes cuts into the box from the right, puts it into the middle and Foden was there but Borquez manages to dive forward and parry the ball away. Sancho takes it away from the touchline and the ball is put into the path of Foden once again. This time he manages the shot by Borquez saves

60′: GOAL! Sancho scores his second and that is thanks to some brilliant work from George McEachran. He snatches the ball away with an interception and charges forward, steps away from one Chilean defender, sidesteps another before sliding into the path of Sancho, woefully unmarked once again. Sancho slots into the bottom left corner of goal

54′: Sancho dances past three Chilean defenders and reaches the box. He then loses the ball and runs back to retrieve but seems to have taken a knock from Martin Lara in the process and goes down. A bit of medical attention and the Borrusia Dortmund starlet is back on his feet.

50′: GOAL! Sancho doubles England’s lead. The first real mistake by Borquez and Chile pay the price. It was a low ball sent into the box from the right wing, not sure who it was meant for, but Borquez dives forward and tries to parry it away. He only takes the sting off the ball and it lies easily for Sancho who was standing free in the box. He just has to put it into the empty net. Sancho has been the best outfield player on the pitch and deserved a goal but Borquez has been brilliant for Chile so far and it is an unfortunate error 

45′: Second half starts and England on the attack straight away, Foden sends a hopeful cross into the box from the right midfield area, Borquez punches it out. Chile then take control of the ball but their counter is snuffed out by England.

HALF TIME! Chile 0-1 England. England had another chance just before the half-time whistle as Hudson-Odoi got past the Chilean centre-back left side of the goal and took the shot aiming at the far corner, misses the post by some distance. It has been England’s half and Chile do face an uphill struggle, but it also has to be said now that England have had a lot of chances and have been able to make the most of just one. This wastefulness might be something that coach Ric Charlesworth won’t be too happy about.

Meanwhile, New Caledonia 0-6 France. And that is the score at half time. Own goals, defensive lapses, you name it, New Caledonia are guilty of it. Makes one appreciate India’s performance against the United States even more

43′: Jaden Sancho cuts in from left wing and takes the shot just outside the box, brilliant save from Borquez. It seems to be one of those matches in which a 1-0 lead looks like a 3-0 for 4-0. England have been comfortable in defence and have done the bulk of attack.

36′: Chile have a corner, a rare set piece chance for them. Maximiliano Guerrero floates it in and it goes out with a touch of Jonathan Panzo. Another corner, Guerrero takes again, this time Ignacio Mesias meets it with his head and it goes over the cross bar.

32′: Rhian Brewster chases the ball put into the box by the brilliant Sancho, takes the shot first time but Chile goalkeeper Julio Borquez throws himself onto it and holds on to the ball.

19′: Another chance for England. McEachran drove forward and lifted the ball forward to Rhian Brewster, the latter misses the target.

17′: There is little doubt that Jaden Sancho is controlling the proceedings in attack. Chile have been trying to make headways but such is England’s ferocity in attack that they have to track back just as quickly as they build an attack.

15′: England break with Gomes in the front. He decides to go by himself, takes a shot from outside the box, and the shot flies high above the crossbar

5′: GOAL! Callum Hudson-Odoi scores the opener. Jaden Sancho ran with the ball through the middle and spotted Hudson Odoi making a run into the box in front of him, he puts the ball in his path and Hudson Odoi connects well to put it into the goal far side.

0′: So we kick off, England in white, Chile in red.

1630 hrs IST: England’s win in the U-20 World Cup earlier in the year was touted as an announcement. The country has produced a generation of players capable of bringing England back to World Cup reckoning, or at least that was the inference from that win. Now, their juniors start their own campaign and in more difficult conditions than what they had to put up with. Playing football in Kolkata in the month of October, or any time of the year for that matter, means wiping away litres of sweat and drinking lots of water. And these may be for matches that don’t even last 90 minutes. Nowhere in England would these players be facing the heat and humidity that they will in Kolkata. Chile, on the other hand, have been open about the troubles they have been facing with the weather.
