The Assam unit of the BJP has dismissed its MP RP Sharma's allegations of corruption against the state irrigation minister, Ranjit Dutta, citing lack of evidence and cautioned all members against making "irresponsible" comments.
Sharma's allegations against the minister were dismissed at a special meeting of the Assam BJP held last night. He was asked to exercise restraint, party state unit chief Ranjit Dass told reporters here today.
In a sting operation by a local television channel, the MP had accused the irrigation minister of taking "commission" for allocating departmental works.
Dutta had denied the allegations and filed a complaint with BJP authorities.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Dass had asked Sharma to substantiate his charges.
"Sharma failed to provide evidence. We urge all members to exercise restraint and not to make comments against the party's interests," Dass said.
Members should be careful while making such serious allegations as the BJP is in power and such "irresponsible" comments damage its image, he said.
The meeting was attended by the chief minister and other senior BJP members.
A report of the meeting would be sent to the BJP's central leadership.
