NEW DELHI: Underlining the need to immediately address issues relating to data protection of government servers, net neutrality and secure online payments, a parliamentary panel has identified nearly 20 subjects. These include problems and challenges being faced by the film industry; ethics for media coverage; social media oversight to stop terrorism propaganda; oversight of internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google for data protection of Indian consumers.

The committee will focus on having a government mechanism to evaluate “online terrorist activities”. It will also examine internet companies that gather huge amount of data from Indian citizens in an effort to come up with a system to protect their personal information from getting leaked.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology last week shortlisted nearly 20 subjects from four ministries — I&B, electronics and IT, communications (Department of Posts) and communications (Department of Telecommunications).

The committee chaired by BJP MP Anurag Thakur consists of 31 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including Sachin Tendulkar, Paresh Rawal, LK Advani, Hema Malini, Raj Babbar and Subhash Chandra. The panel will soon engage with respective stakeholders and shortly submit reports on the subjects. “The report(s) will focus on the challenges being faced and the road ahead,” said a top government official.

As per available information, the committee is likely to submit its report on the issue of “net neutrality”, and will also focus on addressing the contentious issue of “digital payments and online security of data”. The committee will also review the functioning of Prasar Bharati and the Digital India programme. Moreover, it will review the National Digital Literacy Mission.

As regards the communications ministry, it has chosen to table to report on real estate management in the Department of Posts. It will also examine data encryption in mobiles/applications and national security concerns. The review of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will also be done by the standing committee. Moreover, it will also look into the progress of implementation of National Optical Fibre Network.

Another subject which the panel will focus on is “oversight of secure online payments and meetings with e-payments companies”.
