Home guard booked for ‘assaulting’ wife

A home guard posted at the Mandir Marg police station has been booked for allegedly assaulting his speech-impaired wife. The woman’s family alleged that he even “forced” her to have sexual relations with his brother.

On October 2, the accused, in an alleged inebriated condition, assaulted his wife with bricks outside her house in northeast Delhi’s New Ganga Vihar. When her brother tried to intervene, three of his relatives assaulted him with a knife and beat him up with bricks, police said.

The case was brought to the notice of DCP (northeast) A K Singla, who told The Indian Express that the “accused has been booked under preventive sections and legal action would be taken as per the MLC”. Although an FIR in the case was registered on October 4, no arrests have been made so far, he added.

When the woman was born, doctors had told her parents that she would not be able to talk. She dropped out of school after Class VI and learned sign language. Eventually, her parents got her married. Soon after, her husband allegedly started to assault her and even “forced her to sleep with his brother”, police said.

Despite her protests using a volley of aggressive signs and facial expressions, the assault went on, her family alleged. According to her family, the couple had married four years ago and have three children. “At the time they got married, he never had a problem that she was speech-impaired. But soon after, he started assaulting her on trivial issues such as not making “tasty” food etc,” said the father of the woman.
