The first trailer for Newness is out. Helmed by ‘Like Crazy’ and ‘Equals’ director Drake Doremus, the film revolves around the relationship between 20-somethings Martin (Nicholas Hoult) and Gabi (Laia Costa), who meet through a dating app like Tinder called WYNX. Newness looks like one film that millennials will enjoy watching.

Martin and Gabi’s relationship starts off like a usual Tinder date, with all the typical questions, “do you want kids?”, “do you want to be married?” and “have you ever been in love?” But soon enough, the relationship takes the weirdest turn when this hook-up turns ultra-serious. And no, it’s not about falling in love! Quite marvelously, ‘Newness’ explores what happens after that. From revealing their best-kept secrets to actually getting into or trying to get into an open relationship, Martin and Gabi’s relationship portrays everything that can go wrong with a hook-up in the 21st century.

And to support this telling plot, the dialogues are no less sincere. Lines like “If you are honest with me, you will never lose me,” are resonant of the times we live in. The trailer ends with Gabi saying that “I know that I am in love but maybe love’s not enough.” And that forms the tagline of this romantic drama.

Talking of the cast and crew, Hoult and Costa are both terrific in their characters and director Doremus captures the whole thing with what can be called his signature intimate aesthetic. A special mention is also due to Ben York Jones’ screenplay which makes this portrayal even more beautiful, as mentioned earlier. There is a definite sharpness to the love scenes that makes them all the more memorable and the film weirdly sexy. Newness also stars Courtney Eaton, Danny Huston, Jessica Henwick, Esther Perel, and Matthew Gray Gubler.

Acquired by Netflix, the release dates of ‘Newness’ have not been revealed yet.
