Kochi’s first match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup is also probably the biggest of the group stage as Brazil take on Spain in a Group D match at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. Brazil won the U-17 South American Championships earlier this year while Spain lifted the U-17 European Championships this past summer. Spain took an early lead through a Wesley own goal but Lincoln equalised for Brazil before Paulinho gave them the lead just before half-time. The enthusiasm for the opening match in Kochi has been evident from the fact that tickets for the game had been sold out last week, although the stadium’s capacity has been reduced from 41,000 to 29,000 due to security reasons.

With both sides being the pre-tournament favourites for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, them being drawn in the same group makes things much more interesting.
