Rain boosts storage level in reservoirs, tanks

Of 519 tanks in Vellore, 26 have filled up

Water level in reservoirs and tanks in Vellore district continue to rise.

A few days ago, water level in Andiappanur Odai, one of the three reservoirs in Vellore district, reached its full storage capacity, while Sathanur Dam in Tiruvannamalai district is filling up.

Heavy rains have boosted the water levels in many of the water bodies in the two districts.

Water level went up in Andiappanur Odai, reaching its full storage capacity of 112.20 mcft a few days ago.

With the dam receiving surplus water, 94.24 cusecs was being discharged as on Friday, according to data available with the Public Works Department (PWD).

Water level is rising in another reservoir in the district – Mordhana Dam near Gudiyatham.

As against its full storage capacity of 261.36 mcft, the dam has 198.34 mcft of water. The inflow stood at 323.26 cusecs.

Rajathoppu, another reservoir, has 13.75 mcft of water as against its total capacity of 20.52 mcft.

In fact, the levels in many PWD tanks have also improved.

Of the total 519 tanks maintained by the PWD in Vellore, 26 tanks – 12 in Katpadi, one each in Vellore, Tirupattur and Arakkonam, two each in Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Nemili and Arcot and three in Walajah have filled up.

Another eight tanks have 75% water of its total capacity, while 24 tanks have 50% water. The remaining 461 tanks have less than 30% water.

Sathanur dam

The water level in Sathanur Dam in Tiruvannamalai is also on the rise since last month. As on Friday, the water level reached 111.10 feet of the dam’s total depth of 119 feet.

As against its full storage capacity of 7,321 mcft, the dam had 5,646 mcft of water now.

The dam has been receiving surplus water from the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project Dam since last month. On Friday morning, it received an inflow of 4,733 cusecs of water.
