Germany started their FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign on a positive note as they defeated Costa Rica 2-1 in their Group C encounter. Skipper Fiete Arp handed Germany the lead but Andrez Gomez made it 1-1 for Costa Rica. The game was heading towards a draw but Noah Awuku struck towards the end of the game to hand Germany a crucial victory.
