Ittefaq: This Bollywood whodunnit has got us thinking

‘Ittefaq’ is a remake of the 1969 film of the same name.

With Ittefaq, Bollywood is bringing back the edge of the seat entertainers that hold the audience’s attention until the end. Directed by Abhay Chopra, the film is a remake of the 1969 film that starred Rajesh Khanna and Nanda in lead roles. The original film was directed by Yash Chopra, way before he discovered the Swiss Alps.

The 2017 remake of the film stars Sonakshi Sinha, Sidharth Malhotra and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles and if the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like they’ve all done a fine job.

Sidharth plays Vikram Sethi who is being questioned for two murders – his wife Catherine Sethi and Shekhar Sinha. He pleads innocence but what good would be a murder investigation if the suspect’s words are taken at face value?

Sonakshi plays Maya in the film who is also being questioned for these two murders. Her demeanour in the two points of view, hers and Vikram’s, changes drastically. While she poses to be a victim in her own narrative, she looks like a conniving lady in the other.

The cop, Inspector Dev, is being played by Akshaye Khanna and it looks like he is the center of the film. He is the one given the task of finding out the truth amongst this web of lies. But how is he going to get to the bottom of this mess?

Here’s looking at all the possible suspects that could be responsible for these murders:

1. Vikram Sethi (Sidharth Malhotra)

He is the first one to be interviewed by the Inspector in the trailer. He says that he has been in an accident and uses that as an excuse to enter Maya’s house. But Maya has a different story to tell. As per Maya, he enters her house forcefully.

2. Maya Sinha (Sonakshi Sinha)

Maya says that she was waiting for her husband on that unfortunate night and opened the door expecting it to be him on the other side. Her side of the story has her playing the woman who is distraught by the investigation. But in Vikram’s story, she comes across as a woman who was very comfortable in her surroundings and was even quite inviting in her approach towards him.

3. Vikram & Maya

The two pose to be strangers but there is a possibility that they are just acting this way. They could have planned to kill their respective spouses and then act like strangers so no one gets implicated.

4. Inspector Dev

In the trailer, Vikram says that the Inspector doesn’t really care about finding the truth. If that is actually true, there is a possibility that the cop has gotten involved in this case just to clear his name.

Akshaye Khanna plays the role of a cop in this thriller.

5. The person who rings the bell

At the end of the trailer, a door bell can be heard and it is mentioned that someone else was present on that eventful night. If that person is the culprit or not, this can be found out only when we watch the film.

Sonakshi Sinha’s character has multiple shades in the film.
