Indore: Under the VIRASAT-2017 series organised by SPIC MACAY Indore chapter, renowned Bharatanatyam artist Uma Nambudripad Sathya Narayanan will give lecture-demonstrations on the classical south Indian dance form at different schools in city from October 9 to 12.

The inaugural session will be held at New Digamber Public School (NDPS) on Khandwa Road, followed by Shishukunj International School, Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar, Institute of Management Studies, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Shri Vaishnav Vidyapeeth Vishwavidyalaya and Acropolis Institute of Technology and Research on the following days.

The dancer will be accompanied by Venkata Subramanian on mridangam, Mysore Sangeetha on vocal, Lakshmi on violin, and Vidya Ravindran Anand on nattuvangam.  Uma Nambudripad, a Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee, is an accomplished and acclaimed dancer. She is a senior disciple of legendary Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Guru Chitra Visweswaran (Padmashree awardee) under whose tutelage she embarked on her artistic journey.

She has also been a disciple of late Kalaimamani Pandit R Visweswaran in Carnatic vocal, from whom she received advanced training in Carnatic music, voice culture and the specialised form of music accompaniment for dance. Her performance of natya is enhanced by her knowledge and understanding of classical music. This in-depth knowledge of music also compliments her skills in choreography and nattuvangam, a quality which is rare in today’s youngsters. In addition to dance, she is also trained in other cognate art forms such as dance music, theory and stagecraft.

A noted soloist, she has performed in almost all the leading sabhas of Chennai, many major festivals across the country and overseas, including shows in UK, USA, Sri Lanka, Singapore, France, UAE, Australia and Spain to name a few.
