NEW DELHI: Amid firm global cues. benchmark indices recovered from Thursday's losses to end the session higher on Friday, ahead of the GST Council meet scheduled for later in the day .

BSE Sensex added 222 points or 0.70 per cent to close the session at 31,814.22, while Nifty50 ended firmly at 9,988.45, up 99.75 points or 1.01 per cent.

BSE Midcap index added 148 points or 0.95 per cent to end at 15,840.15 with shares of SAIL (up 4.34 per cent), Crompton Greaves Consumer (up 3.85 per cent), Endurance (up 3.60 per cent), Chola Finance (up 3.55 per cent) and Federal Bank (up 3.37 per cent) adding to the gains.

At the same time, BSE Small Cap index rose 177 points or 1.08 per cent to end at 16,626.77 as shares of BASF, EMMBI, India Glycols, Arshiya and Sanga Mind surged over 12 per cent.

Rally in metal stocks such as Tata Steel (up 4.98 per cent), Hindalco (up 4.46 per cent), SAIL (up 4.34 per cent), JSW Steel (up 3.29 per cent) and Jindal Steel (up 2.98 per cent) outshined in trade along with others pushed the BSE Metal index up by 431 points or 3.14 per cent.

At the same time, shares of oil & gas companies such as GAIL (up 5.83 per cent), IOC (up 2.87 per cent), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (up 2.49 per cent), Petronet (up 1.97 per cent) and Reliance Industries (up 1.53 per cent) also boosted market sentiment along with gains in PSU Banks and IT stocks.

On the NSE, Nifty Metal (up 3.14 per cent) emerged as the top gainer in trade with all other sectoral indices ending the day in the green zone. Nifty PSU Bank index recovered from previous losses to end at 3,101.90, up 2.07 per cent.

Among specific stocks, shares of Muthoot Finance climbed 3 per cent in Friday's trade even as Baring Private Equity Partners India completely exited its seven-year investment in the listed non-banking financial company.

In the primary market, MAS Financial IPO kickstarted its bidding process with a 68 per cent subscription on the first day itself.

Meanwhile, the Rs 1,157 crore initial public offer (IPO) of Godrej Agrovet (GAVL) was subscribed 52 times on the final day of the bidding process.

Globally, the pan-European STOXX 600 dipped 0.1 per cent with investors' focus turning from a separatist crisis in Catalonia to US jobs data expected later in the day.

Meanwhile, Japan's Nikkei share average scaled a fresh two-year peak on Friday and posted its fourth straight weekly gain. It ended 0.3 per cent higher at 20,690.71, Reuters reported.
