Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make GST a truly ‘One India, One Tax’ by abolishing multiple taxes. Talking about GST on Twitter, Rahul said, “Wish Modiji viewed economic slide and GST mess from a prism of solving suffering of people than furthering electoral interests. First step would be to bring fuel under GST to prevent excessive profiteering from common man, as GOI (Government of India) alone earns Rs 273,000 cr.”
“Textile industry is a massive job generator. It yearns for correcting distorted GST structure. Traders, MSMEs and small businesses suffer while cronies profit. Agricultural sector in deep distress. Pesticides, fertilizers, tractors, agri equipment, cold storage and warehouse construction are taxed under GST,” the Congress vice-president tweeted.
Rahul suggested, “Time to correct ‘One Nation, Seven Tax’ multiple form filing and draconian power of taxman. Make it ‘Good and Simple’ beyond rhetoric.”
In another tweet, Rahul took a dig at the PM, asking the latter to explain why China was building roads in Doklam region, which was recently the site of over 2 months-long standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers.
Congress vice president asked Modi to explain reports of road construction activity by China in Doklam if he was done “thumping” his chest. “Modiji, once you’re done thumping your chest, could you please explain this?” Gandhi tweeted, tagging a news report headlined, “With 500 Soldiers On Guard, China Expands Road In Doklam”.
Gandhi’s comment came a day after sources said China has maintained a sizeable presence of troops near the site of the Dokalam standoff with India and had started widening a road, around 12 km from the area of conflict.
Both Indian and Chinese troops were locked in a 73-day standoff in Doklam from June 16 over road construction activity at the India-Bhutan-China tri-junction.
